Abstract

Linux server administration is a relevant competency in the education of information technology professionals due to the widespread use of these systems in technological infrastructures, network services, and business environments. This study aimed to analyze Linux server administration as a strategy for strengthening technical competencies among students enrolled in the Information Technology Management program at Institución Universitaria de El Espinal (UniEspinal). The research followed a quantitative approach, with a descriptive scope, a non-experimental design, and a retrospective component, based
on the analysis of academic records from 59 students who completed practical activities in Linux environments. Activities related to file systems, text editors, user and group management, and the configuration of FTP, DNS, and DHCP services were analyzed. The
results showed an overall final grade average of 4.00 out of 5.0 and a passing rate of 83.1%.
The highest average scores were obtained in DHCP (4.37), FTP (4.14), and DNS (4.03) configuration activities, whereas file systems showed the lowest average score (3.10). The findings indicate favorable performance in activities requiring the integration of operating systems and networking knowledge, although the study design does not allow causal relationships to be established. It is concluded that Linux server administration practices provide a relevant setting for applying technical competencies and identifying opportunities to strengthen fundamental content in technological education.
